Alex Nieto was a beloved member of the community who was shot and killed by 4 SFPD officers on March 21, 2014 in his gentrified neighborhood of Bernal Heights. A jogger called 911 when they spotted Alex walking in the park with a holstered taser which he needed for his night job as a security guard. When the police arrived they surrounded Alex and shot him 14 times killing him instantly. A witness claims the police never warned Alex to put his “weapon” down. This is an example of the culture clash happening in many neighborhoods throughout SF. Bernal Heights is ranked as the hottest neighborhood in the country for homebuyers where long time residents are being forced out due to high rent. Gentrification in these barrios is not only forcing out families but it is also causing these people to become profiled as threats to the community and victims of police violence. Gentrification = Police Brutality for black and brown people in the hood.
