Meagan Hockaday was a 26 year old mother of three who was killed by officer Roger Garcia of the Oxnard Police Department when he responded to a domestic violence call at her home on March 28, 2015. According to police, the officer made contact with Meagan's boyfriend near the front door and within seconds she allegedly approached them with a knife when she was fatally shot. Violence perpetuated against women in abusive relationships put them at higher risk of death and incarceration because of their survival strategies especially in altercations where their life, or the life of her children are threatened. Also, police are trained to shoot before properly assess a dangerous situation which is the case in most police shootings involving black victims. It took less than 20 seconds after the officer's first contact, for him to open fire.
